n this, the second solo exhibition at Carl
Hammer Gallery by Brooklyn based painter, Marc Dennis, we present a new
body of work based on a study of female nudes. The artist leads us in
an imaginative reconsideration of a traditional style of figurative
painting, addressing the subversive potential of beauty and pleasure.
By allowing that the sexual appetite conditions us as a species,
Dennis’ paintings are a personal response to this experience.
The painting of women in provocative poses represents a search for
authentic subjectivity by appealing to something hard-wired or innate in
all humans. Assuming that sex preoccupies the behavior of many, if not
most, humans, one of Dennis’ objectives with this new body of work,
using a straightforward style of figurative painting, is to force us to
confront the theme of desire and authenticity.
Dennis intends the viewer of these paintings to see the women in them
both as erotic characters and as people who clearly understand their own
sensuality. The women and their surroundings appear naturally real,
each a representation of an actual environment, suggesting a kind of
believability. In this series, the women he paints are never alone,
alluding that there is always a viewer. But each woman is clearly an
individual, responsible for her actions, and alone with her own thoughts
and feelings. The artist further clarifies; “In my mind, my images of
women, whether unclothed or partially unclothed, although depicted in
somewhat inviting and precarious positions, are always aware of their
powers.”
Visual representations of sexuality throughout history have played key
roles in the culture of sex, ranging from open display to absolute
censorship. Gustave Courbet’s controversial 19th century
painting, L’Origine du monde, was painted in an era when moral
values were being questioned. Dennis’ paintings exude an
extraordinary physical and emotional intimacy, evoking a modicum of
seduction, providing the imagination opportunity to invent an immediate
aftermath regarding the image. This spontaneous collaboration between
viewer and painting provides the focus for the exhibition.

Elmira College,
Elmira, NY, 1999 – present
Professor of Art,
Full-time, Tenured, Fine Arts Division, Department of
Art
I teach all levels of painting, drawing, figure drawing,
and digital imaging
In addition, I also created and teach a unique course every
two years entitled; Under the Floorboards – Hidden Art
of the Holocaust. The 275-page syllabus involves a
comprehensive visual survey course on the history of the
Holocaust, with a particular focus on clandestine
artwork and SS commissioned artwork made by prisoners
inside Nazi concentration camps and ghettos from
1933-45. Course content includes thorough components of;
Hitler’s own art portfolio, official Nazi art and film,
German and Allied Propaganda art and Degenerate Art. I
also teach a rare off-campus course known as
“Project DUMBO”
an all-encompassing course based in Brooklyn where nine
select art majors live and work together in a loft and
explore the challenges of life in the city for a young
artist.
